Rainbow Festival – 2nd to 8th December – Fuerteventura
The following post was written by Robert P.
Ask yourself this question – Where would you rather spend the first week of December? In near freezing conditions with torrential rain and less than 7 hours of sunlight, or on a spectacular and warm Canary Island with some of the best beaches and most liberated nightlife on the planet? Chances are that you’d prefer the second choice and for those interested in the LGBT scene there is a great option available – the Rainbow Festival!
About the Festival
The Rainbow Festival first saw the light of day back in 2011, and it was a mixture of gay parades and gorgeous parties that took place on the beach, in the road and in some of the best hotels and bars on the island. It was a real extravaganza and made the Rainbow Festival a date to remember in the international gay calendar. The beauty of this celebration of life is that all are welcome – straight, gay, transgender and bisexuals to join in with the fun and attendees are guaranteed an absolutely mind blowing time for all. Some of the most exciting DJ’s on the planet will be there and you just know that this Canary Island will be rocking all through the night.
Fuerteventura is a regular holiday spot for Brits and the flights come in thick and fast from all major UK airports. The airport itself is very close to Puerto del Rosario and if you are staying at one of the other tourist areas of the island you will find the transfers pretty cheap and reliable. You’ll also have no problem securing excellent beachside accommodation as there are plenty of options. Most tour operators, like First Choice, will provide a variety of package holidays, so all you need to do is choose the one that’s best for you.
The Gay Scene of Fuerteventura
If you’ve never visited the island for a holiday, you’ll be in for a special treat, and the gay scene is just beginning to come to life. Fuerteventura enjoys a very liberal attitude and the laid back nature of the locals translates into a very warm welcome for gay travellers all year round. Indeed, the island’s tourism authority is eager to promote their beautiful island as a perfect place for gay travellers to come and enjoy.
3 of the Best Hangouts
As well as a really liberal attitude to gay visitors, Fuerteventura has a pretty cool gay scene that includes three very special bars:
- Sadie’s Drag Bar – Located in the gay friendly area of Corralejo, this place is an absolute riot and you’ll certainly enjoy the outrageous entertainment on offer nightly until 2 am.
- BubblesXX Bar – Also in the lively Corralejo area, BubblesXX bar enjoys a bespoke ambience that will have you rocking throughout the night. A trip to this bar is highly recommended for an unforgettable evening of fun and so much more!
- Rock Island Bar – Another gay friendly bar with a real laid back approach, Rock Island Bar is the ideal backdrop for a chilled out drink whilst soaking up the lush acoustic music with someone special.
